Geocortex News

Note: Some firms issue a press release when virtually anything that could be construed as news happens (it's a marketing thing, we suppose). While we’re regularly winning and delivering successful projects, forging new business partnerships, hiring exceptional people, expanding into new markets, exhibiting and presenting at conferences all over North America, releasing product updates, and developing new offerings—we’re just not really a press release sort of company.

If you notice a gap in news releases, don’t worry… it means our noses are to the grindstone!

That said, keeping clients up-to-date is important to us. We mostly do this through our blog and our newsletter (which is mailed quarterly; you are welcome to subscribe).

Latitude Geographics delivers full support for ArcGIS Server 9.3

Victoria, British Columbia-Latitude Geographics has released a new version of its popular Geocortex Essentials software that delivers full support for ESRI’s ArcGIS Server 9.3.

Geocortex Essentials 1.4 offers more than just basic ArcGIS Server 9.3 compatibility. In addition to ASP.NET script callbacks, Geocortex Essentials 1.4 introduces full support for MS AJAX partial postbacks incorporated as part of ArcGIS Server 9.3.

For 1.4, the Latitude Geographics development team also conducted a detailed Geocortex Essentials performance review. To coincide with performance improvements in 9.3, these enhancements have boosted general performance and concurrent user capacity.

The general release of Geocortex Essentials 1.4 comes after weeks of user beta testing. "We often get asked about our responsiveness around ESRI’s major releases," observes David Stevenson, CTO of Latitude Geographics, "and I think shipping a release-candidate beta offering full support less than two weeks after the 9.3 release speaks for itself."

Core development on a major upcoming Geocortex Essentials release continues, which will integrate important emerging ArcGIS Server developer technologies as well as introduce several new tools.

York Region Selects Geocortex Essentials for its Atlas Plus Project

Geocortex Essentials is an out-of-the box application for ESRI’s ArcGIS Server that empowers any organization to quickly develop, deploy and manage web-based GIS applications while eliminating considerable ongoing intervention associated with typical starter templates.

Toronto, Ontario—Latitude Geographics announced today that York Region has selected Geocortex Essentials as the foundation technology for six web-based planning decision-support applications and views to be used as a regional atlas for planning and monitoring sustainable development of the region.

Atlas Plus is a GeoConnections-funded project awarded to the York Region, with participation of 9 additional YorkInfo partners comprising nine local municipalities and two conservation authorities.

“Atlas Plus will result in improved service delivery related to planning inquiries, fully leveraging ‘next-generation’ web-mapping technology founded on Latitude Geographics’ Geocortex Essentials 1.2 and ESRI’s ArcGIS Server 9.2 Enterprise Advanced Edition” says York Region’s Nancy Prout, Director of Geomatics.

York Region is expected to grow by 567,000 new residents over the next 25 years and development to accommodate this population increase will be constrained by Ontario Provincial Government legislation targeting growth management including Places to Grow, Oak Ridges Moraine, Greenbelt and the Generic Regulations from Conservation Authorities. “Atlas Plus will enhance our existing GIS infrastructure bringing together data through Web Map Services allowing planners and decision-makers to use and share information for sustainable development and integrated planning in the region” adds Nancy Prout.

Underlying Atlas Plus is Geocortex Essentials which will serve as the framework technology for visualization, geoprocessing, data management, reporting and output capabilities to planners and decision-support makers from across the region.

“We are thrilled to be working alongside York Region on this exciting project.” says Steven Myhill-Jones, President of Latitude Geographics. “Geocortex Essentials offers York Region everything they need to meet and exceed their web-GIS targets including unparalleled integration with ESRI’s ArcGIS Server and ADF, a functionally rich and easy-to-use interface that is both OGC and CGDI compliant and an administrative layer for multi-department management and enterprise control of the web-based views and applications.”

“Geocortex Essentials is more than just a template for viewing maps on the web” adds Rob Lenarcic, Latitude Geographics Business Development Manager. “Geocortex Essentials provides a hierarchical framework that will allow York Region administrators to create, manage, and extend multiple web mapping applications from a single deployed instance of Geocortex Essentials. This approach not only assures total flexibility in application design to accommodate future enhancements but will propagate any changes into other York Region applications – saving the region valuable development time and dollars.”

Geocortex Essentials 1.1 for ESRI’s ArcGIS Server 9.2 Released

VICTORIA, BC - Engineered from the ground-up as extension software for ESRI’s next-generation ArcGIS Server 9.2 and .NET ADF technologies, Latitude Geographics unveiled Geocortex Essentials 1.1 during the plenary session of the 2nd Annual IMF/Geocortex User Conference on April 30, 2007.

”It is clear that organizations are recognizing the value of ESRI’s Application Developers Framework, which is ESRI’s development foundation for the future,” notes David Stevenson, CTO of Latitude Geographics, “so we’ve invested more than five thousand hours of development to create core tools and streamline the process of building real-world ArcGIS Server applications using the .NET version of Web ADF.”

Latitude Geographics is the first web-GIS firm to release a software product to enhance the powerful ADF foundation provided by ESRI. “We expect Geocortex Essentials will appeal primarily to organizations that wish to remain closely aligned with ESRI’s ongoing technology direction,” continues Stevenson, “As ADF evolves, Geocortex Essentials will grow and expand with it—without having to reinvent the wheel or play catch-up.”

Geocortex Essentials provides tools, features, and other enhancements to ESRI’s default Web ADF viewer, but also provides powerful site management tools to simplify the process of creating and managing multiple applications.

”Our goal is to make ArcGIS Server as ‘out-of-the-box’ as possible for developers and implementers,” explains Steven Myhill-Jones, President & CEO of Latitude Geographics, “A Geocortex Essentials license provides an immediate and compelling return on investment, and that value will continually increase as Geocortex Essentials, Web ADF and ArcGIS Server evolve.”

Geocortex Essentials 1.0 for ESRI’s ArcGIS Server 9.2 Released

VICTORIA, BC - Engineered from the ground-up as an extension to ESRI’s ArcGIS Server 9.2 and .NET ADF, Latitude Geographics is proud to announce Geocortex Essentials 1.0. Available now, this next-generation product provides tools and features enabling users to more quickly create web-based applications.

“We originally planned to release Geocortex Essentials 1.0 at the end of March 2007, but clients told us they wanted a first release sooner so they could start building applications with some key functionality not provided as part of ESRI’s 9.2 product,” explains Drew Millen, Product Manager at Latitude Geographics, “This initial release includes several already completed core tools that clients can leverage immediately”

While licensing Geocortex Essentials 1.0 eliminates the cost and redundancy of recreating several tools, it is the upcoming Geocortex Essentials 1.1 that comprises the complete next-generation release. Geocortex Essentials 1.1 will provide many new tools and features, including an architecture for building and managing .NET ADF applications for ArcGIS Server.

“We have focused our Research and Development on products providing functionality to assist clients with their transitions to ESRI’s 9.2 technology,” explains Steven Myhill-Jones, President & CEO of Latitude Geographics, “F rom our work integrating our popular Geocortex IMF with ESRI’s next-generation technology to Geocortex Essentials, our objective is to do for ArcGIS Server what we did for ArcIMS—simplify life for our clients.”

Prior to the official release of the comprehensive Geocortex Essentials 1.1 product, Latitude Geographics is licensing Geocortex Essentials 1.0 at a reduced cost and licensees will be upgraded to the new release.

ArcGIS Server Connector for IMF Released

Available now from Latitude Geographics, the ArcGIS Server Connector for Geocortex IMF allows Geocortex Internet Mapping Framework (IMF) licensees to immediately leverage ArcGIS Server 9.2. The release coincides with ESRI’s long anticipated ArcIMS/ArcGIS Server 9.2, which is now shipping.

Provided as part of ongoing product support, the ArcGIS Server Connector for Geocortex IMF translates AXL requests into ArcGIS Server/ArcObjects requests. Virtually all out-of-the-box tabs and tools Geocortex IMF provides for ArcIMS have been ported for use with ArcGIS Server. However, the connector can also be customized to invoke custom tools that harness the advanced capabilities of ArcGIS Server. The level of effort associated with creating custom tools depends on the nature of the desired functionality.

“This connector provides a simple way for our clients to start leveraging the power of ArcGIS Server 9.2 without making significant changes to their existing web-GIS architectures,” explains Steven Myhill-Jones, President & CEO of Latitude Geographics, “It represents a key first step in helping our clients transition to the future.”

In development since early 2005, the ArcGIS Server Connector for Geocortex IMF is representative of Latitude Geographics’ ongoing commitment to offer timely strategies for clients to implement ESRI’s next-generation server-GIS technology at a pace that makes sense for their organizations.

In early 2007, Geocortex Essentials for ESRI’s ADF, a new Latitude Geographics product that extends the functionality available to users of ESRI’s .NET ADF, will be released. Geocortex IMF 6.0 is also on an aggressive development schedule, and will allow direct ArcGIS Server support.

IMF/Geocortex User Conference a Success

The first annual IMF/Geocortex User Conference took place April 30 to May 2, 2006 at the Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort & Spa in Victoria, BC.

Latitude Geographics organized the event in conjunction with our business partner, Moxi Media. Given that we’d never organized an event like this, we kept things small; this resulted in the event selling out earlier than we would have liked (fifty people for the main conference, and fifteen for the post-conference advanced developer workshop). Regardless, it was a great start and we were thrilled to discover a wonderful community of enthusiastic, visionary colleagues who joined us from all over—a diverse group from Texas to the Netherlands, and everywhere in between.

There was a small group of early arrivals that went kayaking in Victoria’s Inner Harbor on Saturday, and a dozen attendees went whale watching on the sunny Sunday afternoon (they observed a pod of resident Orcas off San Juan Island). On Sunday evening, everyone got acquainted with one another at the reception over drinks and appetizers.

The conference kicked-off Monday morning with a plenary session, which included a thoughtful and entertaining keynote speech by Dr. Peter Keller, who is Dean of the Faculty Social Sciences at the University of Victoria. After the plenary session, the group broke into a technical track for developers and a business track for less-technical attendees, and shared ideas over lunch and during breaks.

On Monday evening, about thirty folks met at a local brewpub for dinner, which provided another great opportunity to compare and contrast experiences implementing web-based GIS within respective organizations—and socialize.

Both days included some exceptional user presentations, and the technical and business tracks continued on Tuesday. That afternoon, the main conference concluded with a look at the road ahead for the industry at large, and how Latitude Geographics and Moxi Media plan to respond to and participate in the evolution of web-based GIS technology.

The following day, fifteen attendees participated in the Post-Conference Advanced Developer Workshop, which had been moved to a larger venue to accommodate demand. They worked through a series of hands-on exercises under the guidance of senior Latitude Geographics instructors.

We got some great constructive feedback from attendees on how we can make the conference even better next year. As it was our first event, there were bound to be minor areas for improvement, but we were thrilled by how smoothly everything went (even the weather cooperated)!

Because attendees overwhelmingly indicated it should be an annual event, we’ve just booked a larger venue for the 2nd Annual IMF/Geocortex User Conference, which will take place April 28-May 1, 2007. We’ll ensure we can accommodate more attendees, be centralized around adjacent meeting rooms, offer more user presentations, create pre-conference introductory workshops (e.g. Introduction to Java for the Spatial World), and provide more opportunities for networking and sharing ideas. Basically, we’ll endeavor to incorporate as many of the good suggestions offered by attendees as we can.

If you have any questions about the event next year or require any support information for budget requests/planning, don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Latitude Geographics was pleased to receive an award as ESRI Canada’s 2006 Foundation Partner of the Year on March 19, 2006 at the ESRI Business Partner Conference in Palm Springs, California.

"Latitude Geographics has continued to build a strong strategic relationship with ESRI Canada," said Myron Doherty, Pacific Region Manager, ESRI Canada. "They have been an integral part of many projects with ESRI Canada across the country and we look forward to continuing to work with them in the future."

The entire team at Latitude Geographics is grateful for this recognition from ESRI. In 2005, we were pleased to be acknowledged as ESRI Canada’s 2005 Partner of the Year.

As always, Latitude Geographics is dedicated to providing the best available Internet geography technology to our clients—regardless of any specific vendor relationship. However, we are strong advocates for ESRI technology because they offer the best solutions in the marketplace. We’ll continue to recommend ESRI’s foundation technology as long as they continue to offer the best software available to meet our clients’ needs.

IMF/Geocortex User Conference

Latitude Geographics, in conjunction with our business partner Moxi Media, is busy organizing the first annual IMF/Geocortex User Conference, which will take place April 30 to May 2, 2006 in Victoria, BC. The conference is now open for registration.

On the weekend prior to the two-day conference, we’ll provide opportunities for attendees to get acquainted with Victoria and discover the reasons why the city is so popular with international visitors.

During the core sessions, there will be session track for developers and a separate track for less-technical attendees. Emphasis will be on topics related to Internet Mapping Framework, but there will be some sessions that are specific to other Geocortex products. Tracks will aslo include sessions related to ArcIMS and ArcGIS Server, effective application design, system planning, and hardware/software implementation. The conference will include a number of user presentations, and attendees are encouraged to submit a presentation abstract now through the user conference website.

Don’t miss this great opportunity to learn, share knowledge and continue building a strong IMF/Geocortex community. Registration is limited and will be provided on a first come, first served basis. This event is expected to sell out quickly—so register early to avoid disappointment!

Latitude Geographics Office Expansion

With renovations complete, Latitude Geographics has begun operations out of its expanded premises in Market Square. Acquired to accommodate steady growth, the additional space provides new offices for the product team and technical support, as well as a fully-equipped training and presentation theatre.

“While we will continue to travel to provide client training on-site, we’ve built this training facility to accommodate growing demand for Victoria-based training,” explains Colin Doak of Latitude Geographics, “and if we didn’t get more office space, we’d have staff actually stacked on top of each other by the end of January”.

It has not gone unnoticed by staff that the new 8’x10’ video projection system will also greatly enhance Latitude’s much anticipated movie nights.

ESRI UC Conference Winner

With over 13,000 attendees, ESRI’s twenty-fifth 2005 International User Conference (July 25-29, 2005) in San Diego was a great opportunity for Latitude Geographics Group Ltd. to share ideas and introduce our technology to people who need it.

Congratulations to Michael Smith of City of Alexandria, Virginia, who won our draw for a free Geocortex Statistics license. Thanks to everyone who entered the draw!

This was a successful conference for Latitude Geographics—and our clients. In addition to our high-visibility advertisement on the back cover of the conference agenda (see below), we were thrilled that three clients (Oklahoma County Assessor, OK; GeoLib, FL; Hamilton County, TN) were selected by ESRI for Special Achievement in GIS awards.

Latitude Geographics Launches Seattle, WA Office

While it has been in operation since mid-May, Latitude Geographics is pleased to officially announce the launch of our new Seattle Region Office.

Regardless of the nearly transparent trade relationship between Canada and the United States, we felt that it was appropriate for our corporate structure and workforce to reflect the number of clients we have in the United States. We imagine this decision will also be meaningful to our US clients and partners.

We’re going to start small in Seattle and grow organically. While we plan to grow the office substantially in the coming years our commitment is to grow well—not quickly. As always, the greatest challenge to growth is finding and hiring exceptional people.

Seattle was a good choice for our United States office for several reasons. We want to ensure all staff to be able to stay informed and regularly share knowledge and ideas in person. It is fast and inexpensive for staff to travel between the two offices. Downtown Seattle is about two hours by fast ferry from the Victoria office (and only about thirty minutes by floatplane). Seattle is a major airline hub, which will eventually streamline logistics for client visits and Washington State is a good place to do business. Also, given the endless torrents of rain, we should get lots of computer programming done.

Darin Loucks will be the primary business contact in Seattle in the coming months. Until joining our team, Darin was a Technical Account Manager with ESRI’s California Regional office. Darin brings tremendous knowledge of the ESRI product line and lots of great ideas for industry-specific vertical applications.

Public Geocortex IMF Editing Demonstration Site for ArcIMS Launched
April 14 2005

Latitude Geographics Group Ltd. has launched a public website showcasing our innovative ArcIMS-based editing tools. The purpose of the public Geocortex IMF Editing Suite product demonstration site is to give GIS decision-makers a sense of the capabilities available though these remarkable, plug-in free ArcIMS-based editing tools.

Geocortex IMF Editing Suite is an extension product for the Geocortex Internet Mapping Framework (IMF), and leverages ArcIMS and ArcSDE to allow authenticated users to perform a variety of common layer editing functions using a number of easy-to-use, yet powerful, tools. The product allows organizations to collect spatial knowledge from non-specialist GIS users in a safe and efficient manner.

Geocortex IMF Editing Suite is a foundation for organizations with an established GIS or Internet mapping program that wish to provide map layer editing capabilities to selected users. First released and licensed as an off-the-shelf product in 2003, Latitude Geographics has previously provided authenticated access to Geocortex IMF Editing Suite demonstration sites to individuals who specifically request permission.

“Given more than thirty-five hundred hours of development, successful implementations, and a strategy for dovetailing the product with future technologies like ArcGIS Server, this is a product that has proven itself to be well-suited for enterprise implementation,” notes Steven Myhill-Jones, President & CEO of Latitude Geographics, “and we want the mainstream GIS community to be aware of what these tools can do.”

Dokdo Controversy

To the People of South Korea and Elsewhere,

We were recently alerted that there was controversial information appearing on one of the world maps we host on behalf of a client organization. The issue related to the labels appearing on two disputed islands between Korea and Japan.

Neither our client nor Latitude Geographics were aware that any contentious information appeared on this map of the world. Given that Latitude Geographics remains impartial regarding controversial geopolitical issues, we have responded by simply removing all labels/information associated with these islands from appearing on the map. These very small, uninhabited islands now appear as simple outlines.

From our perspective, this matter is now resolved. Until this dispute is resolved satisfactorily between the Republic of Korea and Japan, we are choosing to not label these islands at all. There is no need to send additional emails, and thank you to the people who have taken their time to express their concerns.

Yours truly,

Steven Myhill-Jones
President & CEO

Latitude Geographics is moving to new offices

Latitude Geographics is relocating to new offices on the weekend of February 18-20. Having expanded as much as possible in our existing area, a move is required to handle future growth. Given that a large construction project will be getting underway across the street from our current location within a few weeks of our move, the timing is ideal.

We are relocating to a larger space on the south-east corner (yes, our many tropical plants are excited) of the historic Market Square complex. Geographically speaking, we are moving approximately 200’ south of our current location.

We’ve done everything possible to minimize the impact of this move on our clients. Our ArcIMS hosting and co-location clients will be completely unaffected, as the Geocortex Data Centre is not moving. It is likely that our telephone system may be briefly unavailable on the afternoon of Friday, February 18. Please leave a message and we’ll call you back as soon as possible.

Please be aware that our mailing/physical address is changing from 257 Market Square to 204 Market Square (see below). We are now located at the top of the stairs at the main Johnson Street entrance. If you arrive on horseback, it is very convenient because the stairs are adjacent to the last remaining horse drinking fountain in the city. We’re not kidding.

So, our new address is:

Latitude Geographics Celebrates 5th Anniversary

(A message from Steven Myhill-Jones, President & CEO)

July 5th, 2004 marks Latitude Geographics Group Ltd. fifth anniversary of incorporation.

Our company is truly fortunate to have such a remarkably talented staff and network of business partners. Our success to date is due in large part to the commitment of my colleagues whose dedication, talent and enthusiasm have consistently exceeded the expectations of our clients.

It is also an honor to work with our clients. Though spread across many places and industries, a common thread is their loyalty, vision, and spirit of collaboration. Many of the ideas and development directions that we pursue are based on feedback from our clients.

Since 1999, Latitude Geographics has experienced steady, sustainable growth and has emerged as one of North America’s leading Internet geography firms. Everything we do revolves around one goal; to help people use geographic information to make better decisions.

We have built our client base one by one, project by project. We have grown without the assistance of venture capitalists-our business model depends on quality results and satisfied clients.

We look forward to the next five years.

Geocortex Uptime Beta

Thank you to the organizations that have participated in our Beta program. Latitude Geographics is presently conducting final testing and preparation of our new off-the-shelf Geocortex Uptime for ArcIMS product.

Though it is a high-quality and well-designed product, ESRI’s ArcIMS is not immune to unplanned downtime because it still relies on the proper integration and performance of numerous third-party software and hardware components.

As a licensed Application Service Provider and manager of numerous co-located ArcIMS installations on behalf of clients, Latitude Geographics helps monitor and manage dozens of ArcIMS sites 24/7/365. In 2001, due to mounting administrative responsibilities associated with managing the growing Internet geography architecture for which we are responsible, Latitude Geographics developed a suite of software modules for ArcIMS architecture management.

Due to ongoing client interest, in 2004 Latitude Geographics has embarked on a project to productize these modules that have been developed, tested, and implemented over several years. After a comprehensive design review and the addition of numerous new features, Geocortex Uptime is nearing readiness for commercial licensing.

Designed to ensure maximum ArcIMS/ArcMap Server uptime and efficient architecture management, Geocortex Uptime is scheduled for final release as an affordable, off-the-shelf software product in late July 2004.

ESRI Business Partner Conference

Latitude Geographics recently attended the 2004 ESRI Worldwide Business Partner Conference in Palm Springs, California (March 6–9, 2004).

With our Geocortex Internet Mapping division, our objective is to provide our clients with the best and most advantageous Internet-based geography technology available.

In addition to meeting with our various business partners, this conference primarily gives us an opportunity to learn about ESRI’s latest product developments and future technology directions. This helps us properly align our offerings with the future of ESRI’s products and services. For example, this year we were able to determine a clear strategic pathway to ensure our Editing Suite for ArcIMS dovetails with ESRI’s emerging ArcGIS Server technology.

Bruce Mackenzie joins Latitude Geographics

Latitude Geographics Group Ltd. is very pleased to announce the addition of Bruce Mackenzie to the Latitude Geographics team as a Senior Internet Geographer.

From 1994-2004, Bruce Mackenzie developed a reputation as one of British Columbia's most respected "GIS gurus" at Ministry of Sustainable Resource Management (formerly Ministry of Environment). During his time with MSRM, Bruce oversaw the creation and expansion of their spatial data warehouse containing hundreds of layers of geographic data. He created the MSRM GIS website (http://srmwww.gov.bc.ca/gis/) and helped design, develop and/or manage four generations of spatial data query applications, including the Internet Mapping Framework (IMF) layer for ArcIMS.

Bruce also facilitated a working group of GIS professionals across government who developed an enterprise distributed ArcInfo GIS network with hundreds of internal government users. In October 1999, on behalf of the entire Information Management Working Group, Bruce Mackenzie accepted an award from ESRI Canada for implementing GIS so successfully within the organization.

Prior to working in the provincial government, Bruce worked in the private sector helping to develop PAMAP GIS.

At Latitude Geographics, Bruce will be applying his experience as a spatial architect and his involvement in enterprise system design to ongoing client consulting, project management, and contributing to large system developments.

Hosting Facilities Upgrade

To better serve our clients no matter what the world throws at our fair city, Latitude Geographics has migrated its data center from 257 Market Square to Group Telecom’s nearby $13 million facility.

The new Latitude Geographics Data Center is fully climate controlled, but is now located in a state-of-the-art earthquake-reinforced building that is protected from fire by an Inergen-based fire suppression system, and offers multi-day UPS protection. It is even more secure from unauthorized access, using verified Photo-ID passcard access with 24-hr video monitoring.

The Latitude Geographics Data Center offers high speed Internet connectivity (10MB/s, with up to 100MB/s burst speed available) through redundant fiber optic cable connections that offer fast, reliable service.

Latitude Geographics has served as a licensed Application Service Provider (ASP) for ESRI's ArcIMS since August 2000. This allows us to host Internet maps on our servers for clients, which saves them time and money—our service is low risk and commitment free. In this time, we have developed and hosted many ArcIMS applications, ranging in size from 50MB of data to 30GB. Some clients have hosted several months, others for more than two years.

In addition to our Geocortex server infrastructure, we also co-locate servers for numerous clients. Using a client’s hardware and software, we fully manage all aspects of their co-located Internet mapping server.

The entire architecture was migrated late at night over the holidays, in a three-stage process that ensured minimal service interruptions.
